Les DCG3 à Milan

DCG3’s Cultural Discovery of Milan

Milan is a city with a lot of history thanks to its historical patrimony. We moved through the town easily with the subway and tramway. You could also travel by electronic scooter (it’s very fun). The most impressive monument is the Duomo of Milan; one of the biggest European churches. This church is composed of 58 pillars and it took 400 years to build. Luckily we climbed up to the roof in order to have a full 360 degree view. It is breathtaking!

Next to the Duomo, there is the Galleria Vittoria Emmanuelle II, which resisted bombing during World War II with its glass ceiling. Inside, there are several luxury shops for food and clothes, but you’d better have a lot of money to spend! You can also spin your heel three times on the dancing bull of good fortune for good luck.

We advise you to picnic in the Sempione Parc with a Margherita or Buffalina pizza from Pizzium (one of the best pizzerias we tasted in Milan). You could also try a piadina from La Piadineria to try a warm folded sandwich that is very tasty and filling. You could stroll through the Castello Sforzesco and enjoy the view of the castle.

In Milan you can also find a lot of churches dated back to the 14th century. You might find a treasure in one of them. We visited the churches of Santa Maria della Grazie, Sant’Ambrogio and San Maurizio al Monastero Maggoire which is called the “Sistine Chapel of Milan”. You will be surprised by each one’s architecture and art.

We visited La Pinacoteca di Brera, a famous art gallery which has many renowned paintings from the Renaissance including artists such as Andrea Mantegna, Tintoretto, Caravaggio, Raffaello Sanzio (Raphael), Francesco Hayez, Piero della Francesca, Giovanni Bellini and others. It is also worth going to the Museo del Novecento where you can see many modern paintings and sculptures and enjoy a stunning view of the Piazza del Duomo and the Duomo itself!

Some of us were lucky and got the chance to watch a match at the Stadio San Siro. This monument was impressive due to its capacity of 80.000 people. We were granted permission to enter a university campus at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and we admired the porticoes and courtyard while we learned about the city’s universities. We also enjoyed visiting the Brera and Navigli neighbourhoods and tasting delicious pasta dishes for dinner: “Chi vuole il tiramisù?”.

We prepared our cultural visits in English class and presented all of the monuments and cultural sites in English during our trip! Some of us even spoke Italian with the Milanese and with our teachers. We were immersed in different languages during our trip to Milan.

If you go to Milan, don’t forget to have a few coffee breaks, we highly recommend having a cappuccino and learning a bit of Italian!
